Kino Varšava

Kino Varšava is the oldest cinema in Liberec, and yet at the same time it is quite new. The space is stunning from first entering to the moment you are seated before screen. The building was designed in the Art Deco style in 1922 by Liberec-born architects Josef Effenberger and Fritz Noppes. Its present design, as well as its name, dates back to the 1960s. It has a long history and immense cultural value, yet it sat abandoned until 2008. In 2012 it was adopted by an initiative which prevented its sale into private hands. The founding members of the Zachraňme kino Varšava / Let’s Protect the Kino Varšava initiative, which later became Kino Varšava, were Petr Hubáček, Zuzana Koňasová, Ondřej Pleštil, Vlastislav Trubač and Jiří Žid. The team currently has twelve members, and it is these people who rent the space and organize the cultural program, while continuing to carefully renovate the entire building. The renovation project of the foyer received the Grand Prix from the respected Obec Architektů / Community of Architects. It also boasts a new café, and the expansion of the cinema’s underground level, as well as a backstage for a new multifunctional space, are currently in the works.
