We’re a Kind of Platform
Kulturní Rašelina and Jitka Doubravová
This is a community of friends from various fields who have a desire to meet and develop non-traditional events in the region and who largely draw on history and the particular needs of the local public. The spectrum of their activities is broad: from bread baking, neighborly celebrations, yearly staging of the Nativity, to concerts, theater, dance and art workshops. They organize Tanec Praha in Sušice, and the UBU camp, otherwise known as Woodstock ŠumAvy, which always features their characteristic Geodome tent. They also stage literary and science walks, and in the past have also organized the dramatic wanderings of Josef Váchal, dedicated to his novel Gabreta Dying and Romantic. They collaborate with current authors, presenting the contemporary world and its transformations. The society has prepared a number of temporary projects, such as the cinema in the Hartmanice synagogue, which screened historical films related to the Second World War. The next year, they founded the Rurální kinematograf (Rural cinematograph) in collaboration with the theater Chemické divadlo of Venuše ve Švehlovce. They enjoy a tendency toward “cultural freshness” and their range of activities is very rich, just like the peat bogs of Šumava. Apart from the cultural program, they also work to conserve nature, craft, and self-sustainability.
