Sudetenland in Contemporary Art

The theme of the Sudetenland and references to German culture are appearing with increasing urgency in contemporary art and literature. One of the artists for whom this theme is central is Mark Ther, who in his videos and installations brings together various real and fictional stories touching on the issue of displacement and the loss and search for identity. In literature, Sudetenland stories appear repeatedly, for example in the work of Jaroslav Rudiš and Markéta Pilátová. The Czech-German festival V centru / Im Zentrum, held since 2016 in Jeseník, seeks to strengthen Czech-German ties by highlighting the lost cultural heritage of the region. Petr Bergmann, a regional writer and collector of maps and images of local history, whose publishing ventures include richly illustrated publications on the past of specific localities and the stories of local personalities.
